The first time I read this headline, I had this image of a makeshift shower with a plastic bag for water, trapped in my mind. I started to imagine how such a contraption might work and even came up with a few designs myself. Much to my surprise, the image I had in my mind, was far off.
Believe me, I did try and find a real portable shower, but this is what it is.
A DIY portable shower is a mixture, not an actual contraption. It does not use running water, so do not expect any warm, soothing water.
Here is what you will need to make it:
- Some shower gel (and yea, the non-toxic, organic kind preferably)
- An empty container
- Water
- A freezer
First, fill your container with water. Squirt shower gel/organic soap into the water and then mix it thoroughly.
Close the container and then let it freeze all the way through. After this, open the container and add another layer of water without any soap or shower gel in it.
Let it freeze again. After the entire content is frozen, take out the block of soap-ice and rub it on your body. Use the clean ice (the layer you added without any soap) to ‘rinse’.
Not to be a snob on anything like that, but I feel that is must be said that this is not an award winning idea. Does it save water? Yes. Does it clean? Probably.
Will people use it? Most likely not. Is it a step in the right direction? Maybe. Rubbing yourself with a piece of soapy ice is not very likely to gain popularity and I cannot fail to see why. while many people will probably try this method, I can’t really envision it becoming an everyday thing. More like a last resort, no other choice, kind of thing.
Reddit pokes fun at this idea and in reality, I do not think that it is very feasible. It is very amusing though and gets a great chuckle out of friends.
I would however like to mention that portable camp showers might be the answer you are looking for. It works pretty much like a normal shower except the water is in a bag. Leave the bag in the sun for a couple of hours to get a nice and warm shower. -ANNABEL SCHOEMAN
