I went to see Timothy Ferriss, author of The 4-Hour Work Week, last night. It was a gathering advertised on his blog and, when someone is hailed as the ‘Indiana Jones of the digital age’, what girl could refuse the opportunity to meet such an iconic figure? I was in for an interesting night; dubbed ‘the slacker’s guide to fun and profit’ by the Wall Street Journal any book that comes with a warning ‘do not read this book unless you want a new way of living’ is always going to court controversy. But whether The 4-Hour Work Week is a con or eye opener is a debate in itself, and the likely people to read it or benefit from it two more. I’m sure there will be plenty of reviews outlining its values and flaws – heaven forbid you may even pick up a copy and decide for yourself – it’s fair to presume being at the top of the New York Times list for 17 weeks and being translated into its 30th language (Bulgarian) that it clearly has an audience.
What of the man, the author? Check out his blog or better still, ‘The 4-Hour Work Week’ is launched in the UK today (Thursday 3 April 2008). Timothy Ferriss will be signing copies of the book at Blackwell’s on 100 Charing Cross Road, WC2, 6-7pm, his first and only London book signing!
