Wonderful World, Beautiful “People”

Posted by Lou on March 19, 2008. Filed under About Us, People, Recruitment.

I was reading an interesting piece by blog guru Seth Godin, who said that HR leaders should change the department name to Talent. This is something we did many years ago (we’re an innovation company, remember?), but recently we’ve moved onto calling it “People”. My view on talent word is that it’s superlative. But people are people – they come in all shapes and sizes and they develop and change. Talented people are very rare – they have a talent which is extraordinary. Think of talented pianist – they are exceptional.

Too many companies end up believing their own hype and think that they are all superstars. This is very unlikely. The top 20% of the compay will always be the top 20% - it’s just the bar gets higher and higher.

We have a little Yes / No checklist we use when talking about our People - feel free to steal with glee!
YES PLEASE! People who understand the business and are here to talk to you about anything to do with your job - the role, the environment, your team, your leaders, your development - any problem big or small.
YES PLEASE! A team which is qualified, experienced and confident in dealing with wide range of people issues in confidential manner.
YES PLEASE! People who are fascinated by working environments and who want our company to be the best place to work.
YES PLEASE! A team of people who can provide high quality advice, coaching and support for everyone in their role.

NO THANKS: Backroom people who process paperwork and write HR bollocks policies that nobody understands.
NO THANKS: People who joined the team because they “like people”!
